The Checklist

I like checklists. Whether it’s organizing a major event or grocery shopping, checklists help me stay organized and focused. There is one checklist, moreover, that I use everyday. It’s what I call my, “Thought Checklist.” In my last post, I talked about the importance of taking every thought captive and making it obedient to Christ. So, how do we practically do that?

For me, I use a checklist. In fact, the criteria for my checklist is found straight from the Bible. I use the checklist found in Philippians 4:8,

“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worth of praise.”

Let’s say that you find yourself with a pretty bad attitude. Chances are, your thoughts aren’t aligning with the Word of God. So what do you do? You use this checklist.

Is that thought:

  1. True?
  2. Honorable?
  3. Right?
  4. Pure?
  5. Lovely?
  6. Admirable?
  7. Excellent?
  8. Worthy of Praise?

If you answer “NO” to ANY of these, then you need to take it captive and get rid of it! In fact, most of our ungodly thoughts can be thrown out with the first question on the checklist. Is it true? Chances are, that thought, when you really begin to think about it, really isn’t true. That’s why it’s extremely important to begin to read the Bible for yourself. You’ll find out what the truth really is.

So, do yourself a favor, take some time, and begin to go through some of your thought processes. If they don’t line up with this checklist, get rid of them. I promise, you’ll see a change in your attitude, and the people around you will thank you.
